Chapter Four

The next morning I headed back to the offices of Dixon-White. I had hard copies of my findings, along with a couple of CD’s with electronic copies of the same. The CD’s and hard copies contained the summary report, which included my relationship diagram produced in Maltego. After a bit of chitchat with the receptionist I was escorted into Tony’s office, where I found him and another gentleman in a suit.

“Parker, come on in, this is Detective Robert Hallam, he’s been assigned to us from the Counter Terrorism unit of our regional police force.” The detective stood up and we shook hands.

“So, Parker, how about you take us through your findings from yesterday, and we’ll jump in with any questions that may come up,” Tony instructed, handing me a VGA cable so I could project onto his wall using a desktop projector that had been moved into position.

I began to run through my work from yesterday, a step-by-step reproduction, explaining the relationships between the various websites, how I came across the avatar, and finding the serial number of the camera from the crime scene photos in the EXIF data. The detective took notes throughout.

“Can you bring up these websites for us now, to take a look at?” the detective enquired.

“Certainly.” I explained that I would connect to the sites using my mobile broadband hotspot, to eliminate the risk of any traffic being traced back to the offices of Dixon-White, although Tony Arden didn’t seem overly concerned about that anyway.

“They obviously want our staff to see the messages on the site and be intimidated, so it’ll probably give them a thrill if they can see we’re the ones looking at it.”

I browsed to the website belonging to The Only Way is Organic protest group. My browser hung for a while, before returning a “404 page not found” error. Weird, I thought, I was sure I typed in the correct URL. I verified it and tried again.

“This is strange, I’m sorry, let me try the other site.” I entered the URL for the stop smuthernature direct action site. The same thing happened. A server side 404-error message. You may recall, that I’d seen two other sites on this server. I tried to hit those too, but again was presented with a 404 error.

“Well, it looks like those pages have gone away, perhaps they’re updating the server or performing some other maintenance,” I explained.

“Never mind, we have screenshots and these are really useful, I’ll try and access the sites later on,” Hallam said.

The detective said that they planned on bringing in a couple of the names I’d handed over for questioning over the next couple of days.

“This name has come up before, and so has this one,” he said, pointing to the names printed on the paper in front of him.

I agreed with Tony that I’d be available should they want me to provide more information, or do any follow up work. I left his office and started to make my way back to the reception area to hand in my visitor badge.
